 February 14--March 31

February 14, 6:15 pm

The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. (Psalm 51:17).

Soon we will find ourselves journeying into the season of Lent, a season where we will be called to consider where God is leading us and how we might learn to follow Christ more closely. On February 14, we celebrate Ash Wednesday, a service that reminds us that “from dust, we have come and to dust, we will return.” We will be challenged to look deeply at our own broken hearts and will be reminded of a God whose own heart breaks for us and who came to bind up the brokenhearted.

Join us on Wednesday, February 14 in the Chapel at 6:15 for a service of worship where we will experience the presence of God in the ash and the dirt, in our voices joined together in praise and prayer, in the faces of fellow travelers and the embrace of friends.

Lenten Worship Opportunities

This Lent we will have a unique opportunity to join our community in the MLK50 journey. The theme for MLK50 is “Where Do We Go From Here?” the title of Dr. King’s last book. “Where do we go?” is always how we phrase the question, but Dr. King knew that the real question is “How will we get there?” Will we go the way of self or the way of service, the way of violence or the way of peace, the way of the crown or the way of the Cross? The former leads to chaos—each person set against God, neighbor, self. The latter leads to community with God, neighbor, self. Jesus invites us to the latter. Shall we join them?

Calvary Lenten Preaching Series and Waffle Shop

Our community enjoys a wonderful opportunity each year to worship together and hear some of the country’s finest preachers during Lent at Calvary Episcopal Church, Tuesday-Friday at noon, February 15-March 23. This year’s series will see the return of favorites such as Rabbi Micah Greenstein and RevDaniel Matthews.  Other well-known speakers include Rev. Barbara Lundblad and Jon Sweeney. Weekly speakers will be listed in our Worship Guide.  Details are also available on the Calvary website.

And of course, enjoy lunch before or after the service at the Waffle Shop.

Holy Week Dates

Palm-Passion Sunday, March 25: Our worship service will begin with a festive palm processional as our journey towards the cross begins in earnest. Join us at 11 am in the Sanctuary.

Maundy Thursday, March 29: This unique service will allow us to reflect on the Last Supper, and like Jesus, prepare us for the journey of the cross. Join us in the Chapel at 6:15 pm

Good Friday, March 30: We'll have a noonday service in our Chapel that will end with us gathering around our cross on the front lawn.

Holy Saturday, March 31: Our families with children are invited to our annual Easter Egg Hunt. We gather in the Sanctuary at 10:30 am for songs and a story about Easter before the egg hunt. That evening at 5:30, we gather at the cross on the corner to decorate with flowers for Easter. This is a beautiful symbol of Jesus' resurrection!

Easter Sunday, April 1: We will gather for an Ecumenical Sunrise Service at Levitt Shell. At 11 am we will celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus during a festive morning worship in the Sanctuary.
